Flight delayed or cancelled: how much does the airline owe you?

Under EU regulation 261/2004, a long delay, cancellation or overbooked flight can be worth up to €600 per passenger. Enter your flight to see the amount.

London → Barcelona · 1147 km

€250 per passenger

Your flight arrives in the EU from outside: it is only covered if the airline is European (Air France, Lufthansa, Iberia, KLM…).

The amount can be halved (€125) if the airline offered you another flight and your arrival delay stays limited.

Make your claim

You can claim yourself, for free, directly with the airline. Or hand the case to a specialist service, which only takes a commission if you get paid.

When does the airline owe you compensation?

Delay of 3 hours or more

At arrival at your final destination, not at departure.

Late cancellation

If the airline told you less than 14 days before departure.

Denied boarding

Overbooking: if you showed up on time, you are always entitled to compensation.

Except extraordinary circumstances

Weather, air traffic control, security. Most technical faults and strikes by the airline’s own staff do give you the right to compensation.

Amount by flight distance

Up to 1,500 km€250
1,500 to 3,500 km, and flights over 1,500 km within the EU€400
Over 3,500 km€600

Separate tickets: what changes

A missed connection is only compensated if the flights are on the same booking. With separate tickets, each flight is handled on its own: a flight delayed by 3 hours or more at its own arrival can still be compensated, but not the missed connection it causes. That’s why Getzy advises keeping a buffer between two tickets.
